Contour is a powerful look design plugin for DaVinci Resolve, developed by Cullen Kelly, a colorist with 15 years of experience in color science and tool development. The plugin is designed to help colorists build studio-quality looks and LUTs (Look-Up Tables) with unprecedented speed and creative control, without compromising image quality or workflow efficiency.

At its core, Contour is built around a unique color science that “listens” to the colorist’s creative intent and adapts in real-time. This means that adjustments made with Contour’s sliders translate directly into a beautiful and stable look that won’t “break” the image, even when pushing creative boundaries. This “listening” capability is a significant departure from traditional tools where complex adjustments can lead to unintended side effects.

The plugin’s workflow is structured into five modules: Curve, Split-tone, Saturation, Density, and Hue. This modular approach ensures that colorists spend their time on the most impactful aspects of look design, guiding them through an optimal order of operations.

Curve: This module allows for quick and precise contrast shaping with seven essential control points. Unlike other tools, adjustments to one part of the curve (like the shoulder) won’t affect another (like the toe), saving significant time.

Split-tone: Contour streamlines split-toning with on-screen color swatches and “Subtractive” sliders. Crucially, it addresses common split-toning issues like tinted neutrals, unnatural color shifts, and skin tone problems, using advanced saturation masks and specialized sliders to maintain image integrity.

Saturation: This module utilizes a unique approach to saturation control, offering separate sliders for low, medium, and high saturation areas. It allows for reshaping saturation in ways that retain detail, condense color, and create harmony without making images look flat or neon. It also features “Versus Sliders” for selective color adjustments.

Density: Inspired by film density characteristics, this module allows for selective hue adjustments to create more separation and a “juicier” image. It helps achieve film-like density while avoiding common digital issues like brown yellows or unnatural skin tones.

Hue: This module prioritizes hues based on the colorist’s workflow and adapts its math to prevent image breakage. It also allows for targeted hue rotations based on saturation, enabling precise color manipulation without affecting other areas like skin tones. A new system ensures consistent hue rotation across different color pipelines and perceptual color targeting.
