Goo Engine is a version of Blender by DillonGoo Studios with some key modifications to the source code that allow us to focus on NPR and Anime style rendering. Key features include the four custom Shader nodes we added to Eevee and Light Groups. You can learn about them on the Professor Goo YouTube channel.

Some have asked why we haven’t pushed these changes to Blender’s master branch: this is because many of these features would not be accepted as they are and may destablize other features like Cycles. We only use Eevee for NPR so we prioritize specific features which the Blender Institute understandably can’t afford to make compromises for. This allows us to develop and test quickly. However, we do actively update Goo Engine to keep up with the native Blender branch so they can evolve side by side. We also regularly add and improve custom features as we use Goo Engine on projects at the studio. Stay tuned for updates. 

[Goo Engine] 4.4 UPDATE 2026 (actually its from 2025 but tehe)

12/29/25 Patch release! Fixes a displacement node that broke in the last update and should* fix AMD GPU crashes. Thanks again to community members for flagging bugs and testing these patches out! Get the new update at the link same link below.

12/22/25 Patch release! Small bug fixes, including the fix for a bug that was preventing the bumpmap node from working. The update is now live at the link below. Thanks as always to our community members for logging their bugs!

A quick note for our Mac and Linux users: We see your comments and requests for compatible versions for Mac and Linux. Currently, we don’t have access to any machines that are running Linux, or any M-series Macs to develop and test Goo Engine builds on. So for now, development for those OS have stalled. For Mac users, we have Goo Engine 4.1.1 on Mac M1 and M2.

The updates just keep coming!
Christmas has come early for our Patrons – we’ve updated Goo Engine to be compatible with Blender 4.4! All your favorite Goo Engine features can now be used in tandem with Blender 4.4, which introduced Action Slots, updated VSE interface, and geonodes improvements to the main build.

This new version also features a splash screen with a beautiful (and entirely 3D) forest from an upcoming project! This short is unlike anything we’ve ever made, and can’t wait to share it with you soon.

Goo Engine 4.4 is still considered “experimental”, so be sure to join the Discord if you haven’t already and report any bugs or problems you encounter while using it. If you’re using any of our custom rigs (Yin, Yang, Emily, or Amethyst), we recommend you stay using Goo Engine 4.3.21 while we work on updating the rigs.
